I spent a wonderful afternoon at Everest Academy talking about how ordinary citizens can provide better alternatives to the measures proposed in House Bill 5043. Most, if not all, of the speakers insisted that developing the proper perspective regarding reproductive health should involve both the parents and their children. In my capacity as resource speaker for both the I AM S.T.R.O.N.G program and I Keep Love Real, I suggested that the interaction between parents and their children should take the form of a continuing conversation as opposed to magisterial lectures dripping with all pomp, verbosity, and the promise of fire and brimstone that indignant and well-meaning parents are wont to deliver in the heat of the moment.
Sadly, the continuing conversation that I had begun in my tv show, Juan on Juan, has to end. Despite the fact that the show had been performing beyond expectations, I chose to stop doing the show precisely because I wanted to spend more time nurturing my growing family. My advocacy, which is really about the choice to love, begins at home. There is no question in my mind that as much as I love having a forum to promote intelligent discussion of my favorite causes, I love my family more. And so, with as little pomp and circumstance as I can muster, I bid a fond farewell to my burgeoning career as a tv personality. Thank you to all the people who came on the show, and to all the people who, despite the horribly inconvenient time slot, faithfully followed the program.
And now, more ordinary than ever, I continue to support life by helping my family grow in love. What a blessing!
The great experiment continues! Instead of boring you with my family's many misadventures in growing, let me talk about my show, Juan on Juan. I assure you, I will bore you sometime soon.
This week on Juan on Juan, I'll be talking to some wonderful women who have chosen to take an active role in educating their kids. First, I welcome back Catherine Lanzona, who appeared on the program previously to discuss her opposition to the RH Bill. Catherine will talk about the Kolbe Academy, a Catholic homeschool program that has worked wonders in her home. Lastly, I will be talking to Chinky Castro Dionisio, who runs a preschool in the Pasig area. Chinky will be talking about how her active participation in her son's education has been a blessing to her family as well.
Juan on Juan airs live every Monday, from 10 pm to 11 pm on ZOE TV (Sky Channel 5, and UHF Channel 33), with replays on Wednesday, from 9 to 10 pm.
Tomorrow night, I'm inviting the lovely ladies behind Latch Philippines, a non-profit organization that endeavors to take the guesswork out of breastfeeding by offering quality lactation education and peer counseling support. While I, personally, never thought that I would host a live television talk show with a potential unintentional comedy rating such as this worthwhile advocacy, I had such a fun time with Buding Dee the last time that she guested on my show that we had to schedule a return engagement the soonest.
So, for those who insist on having a thoughtful, cheerful good time every Monday nights from 10 to 11 pm, please keep in mind this special episode on the advocacy of Latch Philippines.

Last night, we finally aired the first of our two-part series on reproductive health. While I would love to share some snippets from the spirited discussion I had with Carlos Celdran and Bob Guerrero, I don't think that I could do justice to the intelligence, compassion, and fervor that Carlos and Bob brought to the table.
I should inform the general public that Carlos and Bob graciously agreed to certain parameters prior to appearing on the show. Here's a portion of the media brief that I provided, almost cruelly, on the day of the show itself:
As opposed to doing what mainstream media normally does regarding important issues, we will not debate or discuss HB 5043 (Reproductive Health and Population Development Act of 2008). Rather, we will try to discuss, with as much intelligence, passion and humor as we can bring to bear on the issue, the following question:
As ordinary citizens, what can we do to encourage the development of a culture that encourages proper reproductive health?
You are not required to be an expert on reproductive health or the minutiae of HB 5043. In fact, it would be inimical to the intentions of the program for any of us to pretend to do so, should either the expertise or the humility to accept a lack of expertise be absent in the parties concerned. However, I am expecting you, for better or worse, to be yourselves. Please act naturally. In fact, I would like to encourage you to relate your insights on proper reproductive health to your profession, vocation, or personal advocacy.
Once again sirs, my heartfelt thanks. Despite my ineptitude, you helped elevate my rather pedestrian little program into something akin to art.
Next week, I'm inviting some ordinary people who advocate the opposing view: that HB 5043 should not pass into law. It should be good viewing as well.

Last night, ZOE TV started airing my live television talk show, Juan on Juan. The product of a rushed weekend brainstorming session with ZOE TV station manager Jonathan Jabson, the show seeks to give ordinary people the opportunity to share their insights regarding the real-life issues that they are concerned with. As I announced in last night's telecast, this show is neither for the influential nor the powerful. Rather, it's for everyJuan.
Despite the fact that I had never done a live talk show before, and I am quite sure that I made more mistakes than is allowable under broadcast regulatory law, I had a great deal of fun. I can't claim the same on behalf of my guests, but I would like to thank them for the wonderful broadcast experience nonetheless.
My guests were also Juans. I invited Palanca award-winning playwright Christian Vallez, aka "Juan Ekis" and respected public servant Juan V. Borra, Jr., aka "Papa". I am honored by their acquiescence to my request and humbled by the depth and clarity with which they espoused, essentially, a view of life worth striving for.
Many thanks to the callers, particularly Coach Rick Reyes and Kat Aristorenas, for their kind words and support. Fortunately, there is no existing copy of the inaugural episode, and every week remains very much a tabula rasa and a welcome mystery.
