Acquired Tastes: Merchant Princes Series by Charles Stross
If you like:
a fully realized, yet fat-free incursion into alternative history;
gripping, yet accessibly immersive accounts of power struggles within a Mafia-like ruling family;
feisty, intelligent female characters who do not traipse around in their underwear,
then you would probably enjoy the work that Charles Stross has produced for his Merchant Princes series.
It's not your usual science fiction/fantasy hybrid, and I never thought that I would have so much fun seeing basic economic theory used so well in such slim volumes. My compliments to Fully Booked for including this wonderful series in their catalog, though I must warn you that there are several editions on sale, and one edition is significantly more expensive than the other.
